7. Install Clooz

Problem: Installation hangs up with error about Clooz 2.0 msi (Posted 1/2/07)

Solution:

The easiest solution is to uninstall Clooz 2.0 and then install Clooz 2.1. If that doesn't work, read the following:

Installation of modern software is a very complicated process. For instance, Clooz 2.1 typically installs several hundred files on your computer. All installations are done with Microsoft Installer (MSI) and in case of any problems during installation, MSI should rollback the whole setup process and return your computer to the point right before installation.

But in real life, MSI doesn’t always work like that. What does it mean for you? You have a failed installation, you can’t see the program in “Add/Remove Programs” section, and you can’t reinstall the software.

Microsoft provides a special utility to clean up such failed installations. Please realize that installation failure is not a Clooz 2.1 error, as it was thoroughly tested on different computers.

To clean up any failed installation (including Clooz 2.1) please navigate to http://support.microsoft.com/KB/290301 and download “Windows Installer Clean Up” utility by clicking on Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package now.

After downloading, please run EXE file and install it. After installation you will get a new entry in Programs called “Windows Installer Clean Up.” Select that program. You will get a screen like:

Here you need to find Clooz 2.0/2.1 installation and remove it.

Please realize that if installation failure occurred at an early point of the setup process, the installation can have no name (it will be shown as empty or unreadable in the list).

Next please restart your computer and try to reinstall Clooz 2.1 again.

After successful Clooz 2.1 installation you can remove the utility from “Add/Remove Programs.”

Program Issues

Problem: Clooz doesn't work with Legacy 7.0 (Posted 7/23/08)

Solution: Clooz 2.1 was designed to operate with Legacy 6.0. When you upgrade to Legacy 7.0, Clooz will no longer recognize the file. There is currently no Clooz fix for this problem. If you have not yet upgraded to Legacy 7.0, make sure to archive your Clooz 2.1 databases. If you have already upgraded, hopefully you archived the Clooz databases before you did so. In order to continue to use Clooz, you will have to use it separately from Legacy. Open Clooz and then select File/Restore Database. Select the Clooz database archive that you made most recently. When the program asks you where to restore to, make sure to select a location different than where your Legacy database is stored. Once you restore the databases to another location, you'll be able to open your Clooz database and use it separately from Legacy.

Problem: List of people or documents disappears (Posted 5/15/06)

Solution: Click on Edit, then Options. Click on the "Reset Grid Layout Settings" button. Clooz 2 will close. When you reopen Clooz the list will be there again.

Problem: There is no exit button on Clooz templates. (Updated 7/23/08)

Solution: This problem can frequently be rectified by looking in Control Panel at the Display (Windows XP) or Personalization (Windows Vista) option. If you have selected Large Fonts, try changing to Normal Fonts. That may be all that is needed to fix the problem. If that doesn't fix the problem, you may need to adjust the resolution on your monitor. It may mean playing with the settings until you can see the full template in Clooz.

Clooz 2 Tutorial

Problem: Tutorial starts in Notepad (Posted 9/28/06)

Solution: The Clooz 2.0 Tutorial should start right into the program, with music and a menu screen. If, instead, it opens in Notepad, that means that somehow file associations in Windows XP for the type of file required have been changed. Follow these steps to correct the problem:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type control folders, and then click OK.

  2. On the File Types tab, click the heading of the Extensions column to alphabetize the items. Associate HTA with HTML Application. To do this, use one of the following methods:

  3. If there is a Restore button, follow these steps:
    a. In the list of registered file types, locate and then click HTA.
    b. Click Restore. Make sure that the file type that is selected for HTA is HTML Application.

  4. If the Restore button is not available, follow these steps:
    a. In the list of registered file types, locate and then click HTA.
    b. Click Change.
    c. Select Internet Explorer, and then click OK.

  5. If there is no HTA file type, follow these steps:
    a. Click New.
    b. Type HTA, and then click OK.
    c. Click Change.
    d. Select Internet Explorer, and then click OK.

  6. Click OK.
